So I keep mail archives for a long time.

In Thunderbird, apparently, if you move a folder, it may OR MAY NOT disappear, without notice.

I moved folders, all looked well.

I went to look in them, and the files moved were empty.

This happened long enough ago that my backups are expired.

That totally blows. I once lost a few years of IM logs, which really makes me sad.

I've got emails dating to '97 I think. Mine are archived on my [IMAP] mail server on my host (dreamhost). I also have an offline backup, though I need to verify that and create a new one. :\

Yah, see, gmail's tag system is a bit annoying. And IMAP timeouts in tbird suck. I don't generally delete things, but I do reorganize my hierarchies.

I nest folders within folders, and change the nesting.

Really? I use Thunderbird at work and that's scary.

Yah. Though I think it might be related to having over 40,000 messages and nesting folders up to 5 or 6 levels deep.

TBird moves folders by creating new, and moving each message individually. More than about 1500 messages in a folder tends to cause serious perf issues.
