ACK! All this time, I thought it was "supercede".

nooOOOoo. Supersede is the correct spelling.

My turmoil is augmented by this line from Webster:
Supercede has occurred as a spelling variant of supersede since the 17th century, and it is common in current published writing. It continues, however, to be widely regarded as an error.

Just for the fun of it, the etymology of the word is of latin origin, meaning literally "to sit on top".
