Last year and this year, we've had cooperative ant colonies invade. We've seen large and small ants sharing trails and helping with defense and food.

Pyrithrins seem to kill off the larger species, but the smaller ants came back after a short time.

The problem is that they're faster. As in, turbo speed. They're just ho humming along at normal tiny ant speed, and right before my finger gets to them, they go into turbo speed and run like I've never seen, better than an inch per second. They also use evasive maneuvering that's pretty impressive.

Ultimately, the evil human destroys the individuals, but the only thing they fear is wintergreen oil. Unfortunately, that only lasts for about a week.

I guess I need to buy a pint of the oil and a gallon of denatured alcohol (because it's cheaper than everclear), mix it up, and hose down the entire perimeter of my house, and each day, move a little further out, until I have a barrier around the yard.

Except, swarm intelligence... They'll drop in from the trees. Sneaky devils.

I've yet to see a flying scout ant carry another ant, but I wouldn't put that past them either.

Re: Coffeeee Ants

Not so much for the fertilizing, but if you want to get into composting, you can use the grounds for that, as well as insect control.

Well, at least the acidity is good for my azaleas...

which, hrm... The ants haven't been in that corner for a while.
