ST:TNG Tech Manual - Matter/Antimatter ratios
Josh 201604 KWP

OK, the tech manual says:
25:1 = idle
10:1 = power generation
1:1 = high warp (above warp 8)

HOW CAN THIS BE!?!!? M/AR MUST BE 1:1!!!!

BUZZZZ

Remember, the ship transfers bulk power via PLASMA.

Plasma isn't photons, plasma is MATTER.

At high warp, the return plasma is hot enough to simply be reenergized, and you want to save as much energy as possible.

At idle, your return plasma might even be a hot gas, in which case you'd need to recondense it and reinject it into the reaction under more controlled circumstances.

Is your objection based on the TOS episode where they established the intermix at 1:1 for a cold systems boot?

There were several people arguing on a trek boardthat M/A ratio can ONLY be 1:1. I remember such from the episode where Wesley Crusher was being tested at Starfleet Academy.

Meh. The various shows have been consistently inconsistent on this point. Personally, I'd go with Okuda on this one...I've never liked the pat-ness of the 1:1 answer. It limits more than it enlightens.
