Pop quiz: Aircraft Engine Failure
Josh 201604 KWP

Poll #1600257 What to do during aircraft engine failure?

Without searching the web or asking friends, pop quiz, you're taking off from a runway. You're at 74kts and 300 feet up. Your engine fails. What do you do?

Try to restart the engine.
Try to figure out why the engine died.
Pull up to keep from hitting the ground.
Land on the least expensive thing in front of you.
Turn back to the runway.

Haven't dealt with failures. Two seem likely, one perhaps more if I had a better feel for what 74kts@300ft was like.

Yah, if you turn back to the runway at 300 feet, you'll probably crash and burn.

74 knots is probably pretty close to stall speed. You can't pull up, so when you turn, you'll fall faster. Plus, you can't just "turn around". You have to swing out, then curve around and back, otherwise, you'll be parallel to but not lined up with the runway.

At 500 feet, you might do OK, depending on the winds and how close you were to the runway, but there's no guarantee there.
