Where's the photo and caption for the isolinear chips?

Isolinear optical chips' capacities were very vaguely defined in Trek lore. Had the Trek folks consulted with optical engineers for theoretical limitations rather than using "kiloquad" to avoid these discussions, then it would have yielded a much more practical comparison.

Initially, they were reported as being able to store up to 2.15 kiloquads. However, as the term continued to be applied, the definition of a quad can be extrapolated to be between 4 and 8 bytes.

The package was roughly 1" by 3", which contained a small wafer of media inside. I'll assume 1cm by 5cm by 1mm of recording media. That's 0.2752 bits per cubic mm, which is pretty pathetic.

As a comparison, current 12cm plastic disc holographic media has an upper limit of around 325GB in the same volume as an isolinear chip, or 6TB per disc. Current capacities are 27GB for the 10x50x1mm volume, or 500GB for the disc.

For crystal media using 532nm laser, practical storage is about ~10 gigapixels (~6 gigabits) in 10x10x5.5mm with a theoretical limit of ~600gbits (or roughly 1 pixel per cubic wavelength).

Beyond Isolinear Chips, there were also isolinear rods, which could store more due to a larger volume of media. Capacities were not defined, but they would have had to be in the same order of magnitude for the technology at hand.

Isolinear chips were also transitory. Even on the Galaxy class ships like NCC-1701-D, isolinear chips were giving way to bioneural gel packs for higher performance, higher density storage.

Er, I was off by 1000. A quad would be 4000-8000 modern bytes.

That still is pretty lame for linear, optical storage... 17 megs per stick...

But this was all dug up AFTER the fact. I truly omitted trek storage out of obliviousness.
