lilo no longer supports root on LVM for whatever reason.

The fix was to add it to the kernel append line

Apparently, the LILO developers aren't really interested in fixing complex boot, but I'm not quite ready to move to GRUB.

But, anyway, I'm up and running.

Yah, so long as everything holds up during the reorg. My external drive power supply failed while I was reorging. I moved everything inside, and got it self-booting, but I'm on 2 of 4 disks in a RAID6. To top it off, there's 750 minutes left for the conversion from a 3-disk RAID5 into a 4-disk RAID6. Until it's done, it won't rebuild either of the 2 spares.

Fingers still crossed.

How have you not moved to grub already?

Grand Unified Boot Loader

Never really had a need yet.

This system has been in place since Debian Slink, so i guess 1999ish. I've migrated hardware, storage, made the move to Apache 2 and LVM2, but never really ran into a need to go with GRUB. It seems slightly more complicated, but I almost moved when I ran into this issue.
