Jigsaw Download for Debian
Josh 201604 KWP
I don't like shuffling CDs.
There are 2 ways to get a DVD of Debian.
One is to pay $25 + shipping (CDs cost $5+Ship).
The other is to download a couple of files (a dvd template and a list of files/checksums) and then with that, I use "JigDo" to download from a bunch of sites at the same time, and then jigdo will build a dvd image for me to burn.

Those two files are on a shitty assed server in hungary. Packet Delay is only 190ms, which is less than a modem connection across town; however, it's a huge mirror server, on a small box, and so me trying to get these two tiny files is listed as taking 4 hours. Unfortunately, connection drops after about 5 mins. I kept restarting and finally I retried this morning and it's refresh day, so I had to start over.

what dist do you use? I'd use slack, but it's kinda out of date... and redhat is annoying...

Actually, I fell in love with Mandrake a while back. A minimal install of Mandrake is only 65Mb and you have complete control over what gets installed. It does have fancy GUI's for rpm package management and other things but you can still elect to do things on the command line (as I do) and the GUI's will pick up on it and act accordingly. SuSE for example, it's YaST administration interface is horrible in this regard. You do so something on the command line and then run YaST it won't see it and will overwrite your changes. Lame.

Anyways, Mandrake is a wonderful desktop OS. I quite like it :)

fear.. I'll have to try the screaming-root dist then...
