The Oracle of Bacon is now Star_Link!

Uma to Steve Martin as an example of the natural progression of The Oracle of Bacon and The Oracle of Baseball. Star Links will join any two actors using IMDB to map the degrees of separation.

For some reason, this makes me truly, genuinely elated. This is awesome. What computers were made for. (Since this is effectively like the Travelling Salesman algorithm.)

Star Links has been around for many years. I think I saw it first about a year or so after the Oracle of Bacon was put up way back when...

But I'm slow.
It's new to me! :)

Oh btw, I challenge you to find a star link with 5 or more degrees of separation... It can be done.

They say the record is 16.
I've been trying as obscurely as possible and haven't passed 3.

I found one that couldn't connect w/o TV, but adding TV made it a 2-hop.

*sigh*

16 is crazy... I can do 5. I've done 6 once but I don't remember what it was.

So hey, do you guys use xCAT or CSM to help manage your klustyr?

neither actually. I wasn't aware of xCAT and I just looked at it. Sounds interesting. I'll have to look in to it. It looks like only part of it is open source but it's not clear what is and what isn't... do you know?

I'm not REALLY sure. I know alot of the HPC labs use it. The alphaworks site should have the licensing info for the non-open part. The open part is on that other webpage for legal reasons I think.

CSM is pay, and contains some of xCat, and does alot of other stuff. It's pretty cool, but you know, every tool to save you effort can fail and double your work.

Either way, definitely worth looking into.

GPFS is good too... Blows away NFS, but locking can be an issue if you don't set your cluster config just right. Again, a pay product, but I don't really deal with anything free. :/

Otherwise, I've seen some stuff in the community that allow you to boot, install, run diskless, or otherwise manage a medium sized cluster like yours.

The cool thing with CSM is:
DSH: Distributed shell. Can set it up for krb5 or ssh. xCat has PSH for Parallel Shell.
csmstat: lists power and tcpip comms for each node back to the management server.
setupks: builds kickstart and pxelinux.cfg. There's a tool for autoyast too.
