So, time to start making daily incremental backups.

Erica told me the drive upstairs was loud enough that she thought it was the laptop in front of her.

I didn't REALLY register this, since I'd been hearing a faint whine off and on for months.

I logged into the server and no errors in syslog.

I get home and it is very loud from the entryway.

The console shows /dev/sda1 I/O error. Blah.
In a panic I shut it off.

Long story short, it turned out that the noisy drive was /storage/movies, a 73g Quantum Atlas 10k. An empty space, then another bay below it containing / and /home.

I don't know if it was luck, or heat from the band-saw noise, or what, but we lost both drives, 100g of scsi, together.

/storage/movies is no biggie. I've bought most of ZIM already, and the stuff in there was backups of things we have on hard media.

/home sucked. 8 days of whatever has changed.

PS proper incrementals are tougher now that I think about them.

If I simply do --newer, then I don't get deletions.

I'm tempted to set up TSM.

The boy and I have been gathering a lot of zim lately (and a lot of things we hadn't even found before!), so if you know of anything you're missing just let me know.

Well, we lost some lower quality rips of movies that didn't REALLY call to me. We lost Zim, which I have 2 of the 3 DVDs for anyway. We lost Starsky and Hutch DVD-rip, which is OK. We lost "WhatTheBleep", and "I Heart Huckabees", but we have those in hard media and on the laptop. We lost some futurama and simpsons. I like Futurama. Simpsons is a little tired. We lost Dora's Pirate Adventure.

Really, the only thing I miss much is Futurama.

I just realized, one of my 50g drives is just porn, a second copy of backups, and misc junk. I may reclaim that space for mirrorred root drive. WOOT!
