So, I think America is sort of like other veiled societies.

It's just the veils are different.

So many women are afraid to go outside without 1 to 12 layers of makeup.

Quick. Hide yourself.

I know, different reasons, somewhat, but it's still about hiding in some regards.

Veils serve a very different purpose than make-up. Granted, they both essentially "mask", but make-up is designed to enhance. On the other hand, veils drape and disguise femininity; in some cases creating a shadow of a person. It is debated amongst Muslims scholars if the veil is liberating or oppressive.

I agree. I thought about adding that, but I was late for an appointment. :)

I think the oppressiveness of veils would depend on the environment. It definitely helps remove some of the sexual tension aspect of intergender interactions.

To some extent, being more attractive is used by some women as an unfair advantage, tying into subconscious weaknesses. For others, it's to hide because the feel unrefined without.
